Back in January I made a list of restaurants I wanted to eat at. From that list, I've done Daisy May's and Dressler. Pitiful. Still to do: Sfoglia, The Queen's Hideaway and Clinton Street Baking Co.
And now these:
Setagaya 141 First Ave at St. Marks (E. Village)
Boasting to be better than Momofuku (which really isn't saying much), it opens today and I'll be there soon to try it. Why my hatred for Momofuku? Their ramen sucks, plain and simple. Boring, watery broth and boring, tasteless Berkshire pork.
Borough Food and Drink 12 E. 22nd near Broadway (Flatiron)
Pelaccio of Fatty Crab and Chodorow of the anti-critic food blog join forces to create this restaurant/market that serves "five-borough cuisine." Bosnian sausage from Queens? Coriander bacon from Brooklyn? Now you lazy Manhattanites have no excuse. Some gems from the menu:
Cured Back Bull Suho Meso Carpaccio with thanksgiving farms bean salad, celery hearts, pickled green beans
Grilled Ny Sausage Plate with braised red cabbage and currant, brown and forest pork store buttered spaetzle
Cevape restaurant sarajevo beef sausages, kajmak cheese, onion, ajvar chili sauce in pita express bakery pita bread
Hill Country 30 W. 26th near Broadway (Flatiron)
Another new spot in the Flatiron - Lockhart, TX-style BBQ served by the weight and cafeteria style. Moist or lean brisket, Kreuz sausage, beer game hen, beef rib, boneless prime rib.... and your choice of mac n cheeese, chili, sweet potato bourbon mash, green bean casserole (one of my favorites), corn pudding, baked beans with burnt ends, TX black-eyed caviar, chipotle deviled eggs, slaw.... and to end your meal, banana cream pudding, ancho chile cherry brownies, bourbon pecan pie, and Blue Bell ice cream. Thanks to Chris for the head's up.
Fette Sau 354 Metropolitan at Havemeyer (Wmsburg)
More meat by the pound. Except German (but not really). And lots of whiskey and bourbon.
Degustation Wine & Tasting Bar 239 E. 5th near 2nd Ave (E. Village)
With a 5-course tasting menu for $50, this new addition to the small plates boom has taken over the space that used to be Grace's Kalbi Bar. Some examples:
Crispy Sweetbreads with cucumber dill greek yogurt with chilies
Grilled Spanish Mackerel with a trio of apples
Ribeye with a red onion marmalade, molasses and bone marrow
Looks good, don't it. Interested to see the wine list.
The Bar Room at the Modern 9 W. 53rd between 5th & 6th Aves. (Midtown)
I'll skip the intro and just go for standout menu items. (I'm lazy and have a meeting)
Arctic Char Tartare with basil and trout caviar
Wild Mushroom Soup with toasted chorizo ravioli
Seared Sullivan County Foie Gras with "bereweka" fruit chutney and dark beer reduction
Grilled Muscovy Duck Breast with marinated cucumber, quinoa, lobster broth and lemon-pepper chutney
Beer Braised Pork Belly with sauerkraut and ginger jus
Spice Crusted Colorado Lamb Loin with shank and manchego cheese gratin and pomegranate reduction
Swordfish with eggplant caviar and teardrop tomato salad
Pretty hot and spendy.
Choux Factory (various locations)
I love Beard Papa, but willing to try this newcomer, serving vanilla custard, strawberry and chocolate cream puffs, as well as cakes and bagels.
